Have you ever wondered why it has to say female in front of drummer? I mean I have never seen a title that says "Male drummer Does Killer Solo". It seems like drummers are just expected to be boys, and quite frankly, the boy to girl ratio for drummers is horrendous.

Why?

Because, for some reason, playing the drums, or even fantasizing about being a great "rock drummer", or someones favorite "church drummer", is just for boys. I, mean girls cant be drummers, right, its a boy thing, right?

WRONG!

#1 The first problem is, most parents look at their kids drumming as banging on things, and making a ruckus, but not as a show of talent, artistic leaning, and a show of promise.

#2 The second problem is the simple idea that banging on things and making a ruckus is a BOY thing, and not a GIRL thing.

Think about problem #1 like this, when a beginning saxophonist squeaks his way through a recital, or the budding pianist play twinkle twinkle little bit flat and sharp at the same time, we understand that its the pains of learning and practicing a new skill. Banging and making a ruckus, are the the first steps to learning rhythmic skills, and artistry. The reason your child finds it pleasurable to bang on everything, is because they are realizing, maybe for the first time, that different surfaces make different sounds. Striking an object at different velocities makes a louder, or softer sound. They learn the rhythmic patterns of repetition, as well as  how to grip the spoon handle for best angle, ect...

But this brings us straight to problem #2.

Once you begin to see banging as an artistic expression, just like you see your 2yr old's painting you put on your fridge, that is so void of form it looks like a star trek abstract monster creation; you will also see that it is just another human expression, not for BOYS, and not for GIRLS. Not every drummer )male, or female) is sitting around banging on pots and pans, Most of them are simply  introduced to it at some point during childhood, and just fell in love with it.

WE JUST HAVE TO INTRODUCE DRUMS TO GIRLS AS A VIABLE OPTION.

When introducing instruments to your daughter,  or niece, don't forget to show them that youtube clip -  "The best female drum solo", or "Watch This Female  Drum Cover". If we do that enough, maybe one day we wont have to add the word "Female" in front of the youtube title! We can just say - "Awesome Drummer Plays Your Favorite Song" - and she just happens to be a girl. Or just get her some online drum lessons from www.dougsonlinedrumlessons.com
